ContourGlobal Starts Up First U.S. Renewable Plant With 185-MW Colorado Solar Array

The Black Hollow Sun complex will expand to 324 MW by 2026 to deliver roughly 608 GWh a year to Platte River Power Authority.

Overview

  • ContourGlobal placed the 185 MW Black Hollow Sun I solar facility in Severance, Colorado, into commercial operation on September 4, marking its first operating U.S. renewable asset.
  • The plant is now supplying electricity to the community-owned Platte River Power Authority, which serves Fort Collins, Loveland, Estes Park and Longmont.
  • A second 139 MW phase is under construction for service by the end of 2026, which would bring the site to 324 MW and make it Northern Colorado’s largest solar project.
  • The project uses U.S.-manufactured solar modules from Qcells, which is also providing integrated engineering, procurement and construction services.
  • Construction of Black Hollow Sun I generated about 450 direct and 250 indirect jobs, and ContourGlobal reports its U.S. portfolio now totals about 2.8 GW across operating, under-construction and late-stage projects.
