Contested Public Hearing Held for Shree Cement’s Lum Syrman Project

Authorities say the statutory consultation was completed under heavy security; opponents have denounced the process as exclusionary and warned of legal and protest action.

The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board and district officials held the public hearing for the Lum Syrman limestone block on Friday, July 31, and said the session, moved up to 8:00 AM, concluded successfully.
Police cleared blockades before the hearing, used tear gas during pre-hearing clashes, and detained several local leaders according to community groups that say those pre-emptive actions limited access.
Opponents including the Jaintia National Council, Jaintia Students Union, and other local groups say roads were dug up, supporters blocked affected residents, and some listed affected landowners were denied entry.
Supporters and village bodies argued the project would bring jobs and local revenues; the proposal seeks up to 6 million tonnes per year of limestone over about 217 hectares with crushing facilities.
Tensions remain high after an ambulance was reported stoned and unions said they will file an FIR, the Jaintia Students Movement issued a 24-hour ultimatum for leader releases, and legal challenges or larger protests are likely next.
