Overview

  • UKHSA linked 51 Burkholderia stabilis infections from 2018 to 2025 to non-sterile alcohol-free wipes found in homes and first aid kits.
  • Three brands—ValueAid, Microsafe and Steroplast alcohol-free cleansing wipes—tested positive for B. stabilis, and Reliwipe packs were withdrawn after unrelated bacterial contamination was detected.
  • No fatalities have been reported, but several infections required hospital treatment, with immunocompromised individuals and home IV line users at greater risk.
  • Consumers must discard any remaining non-sterile wipes in household waste and use only products labeled “sterile” on broken skin.
  • Healthcare professionals have received a patient safety alert mandating reinforced infection prevention and control measures for wound and IV line care.
