Container Ship Sinks After Projectile Strike in Strait of Hormuz

The attacks have raised immediate safety and insurance risks and could tighten oil and trade flows if they continue.

Overview

  • Two Singapore-flagged container vessels were struck by unknown projectiles while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, with the GFS Pride sustaining a fire and sinking after the hit and the GFS Giselle suffering hull damage.
  • All crew from both ships were evacuated without injury, with 21 people from GFS Pride and 22 from GFS Giselle reported safe by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.
  • The Hydrographer of Pakistan issued a navigational warning about floating containers from the sunken GFS Pride, and the International Maritime Organization recorded the loss as the second vessel to sink since the war began on Feb. 28.
  • Separately, the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged bulk carrier Cape Dao, struck on Sept. 23, is now reported to be sinking after a failed rescue attempt, according to maritime risk group Vanguard.
  • Regional authorities condemned the attacks as breaches of international law, Reuters quoted two senior Iranian officials saying Tehran has adopted new tactics to pressure oil markets, and analysts warn the incidents could raise insurance premiums and lead to more naval escorts.
