Container Driver Dies in Four-Vehicle Pile-Up on Mumbai–Pune Expressway

Investigators are examining whether driver speed or a mechanical fault triggered the crash.

Overview

  • The collision occurred around 5 am on the Mumbai-bound lane near Khopoli on the Borghat stretch, a corridor known for frequent serious accidents.
  • Police identified the deceased as Riyas Ali Ahmed, 36, of Antop Hill in Wadala, who was trapped in the mangled cabin and declared dead after rescue.
  • Officers said the high-speed container lost control, striking a Tata Punch car, then a pickup van, before crashing into a truck driven by complainant Sameer Khan Pathan of Belagavi.
  • The pickup’s driver, Uttam Ramchandra Patil, 27, of Belagavi, and a cleaning helper, Akshay Vasant Janagre, 27, of Satara, sustained minor injuries and were hospitalized.
  • Khopoli police registered a case of rash and negligent driving as teams from Borghat highway police, Help Foundation, IRB, Devdut Rescue, Delta Force, and the Maharashtra Security Force handled rescue and clearance.
