Overview
- From 14 December, Stansted and Southend Airport stations will accept tap-in/tap-out contactless, completing coverage across all London airports.
- The Department for Transport is upgrading 50 stations across the south-east with £18.7 million in funding, supported by Transport for London.
- The change removes a rule that saw many Stansted Express passengers fined for attempting to pay by contactless at the airport.
- Oyster cards will still not be valid at Stansted, and contactless will not cover certain journeys such as Cambridge to the airport.
- The government frames the expansion as part of creating Great British Railways, noting 6.7 million annual Stansted travellers who stand to benefit.
