Consumer Reports Finds Lead in Most Protein Powders Tested, Flags Products to Avoid

Consumer Reports is pressing the FDA for enforceable heavy‑metal limits given the lack of premarket review for supplements.

Overview

  • Testing of 23 powders and shakes found more than two-thirds exceeded an expert concern threshold of about 0.5 micrograms of lead per serving.
  • Plant-based formulas showed the highest average lead levels, about nine times dairy-based and roughly twice beef-based products.
  • Naked Nutrition’s Vegan Mass Gainer and Huel’s Black Edition were labeled products to avoid for having the highest lead amounts.
  • Two products exceeded Consumer Reports’ cadmium concern level and three contained inorganic arsenic, a known human carcinogen according to the EPA.
  • Huel defended its safety testing and regulatory compliance, Naked Nutrition cited supplier checks and sought third-party retesting, and Consumer Reports launched a petition urging FDA action.
