Construction Train Derails in Munich, Causing at Least €500,000 in Damage

The Bundespolizei says an alleged operator error during a shunting move prompted a criminal probe of the 32-year-old shunter.

Overview

  • A Bauzug (construction train) derailed during a shunting operation between Hackerbrücke and Donnersbergerbrücke on Tuesday after what the Bundespolizei described as a Fehlhandlung by the 32-year-old shunter.
  • The crash damaged track infrastructure including rails, sleepers and a switch, plus the derailed wagon, with material damage estimated at a minimum of €500,000.
  • Rescue crews began salvage work around 18:30 and completed it after about three hours, and the MunichLandshut line was temporarily closed while diversion tracks limited passenger disruption.
  • The Bundespolizei opened a criminal investigation for endangering rail traffic against the shunter and used helicopter photography to document the scene for the inquiry.
  • The incident follows a fatal freight derailment in Munich in June and may increase scrutiny of shunting and freight operations and of safety procedures on the city’s rail network.
