Conservatives Pledge 20% Cut to Energy Bills by Scrapping Carbon Tax and Wind Subsidies

Opponents dispute the savings, warning the plan risks greater reliance on expensive gas.

Overview

  • Shadow energy secretary Claire Coutinho told the party conference the plan would save the average household £165 a year and reduce bills by about a fifth.
  • She said axing the carbon tax on electricity would "instantly" remove almost £8 billion from annual bills and claimed over 30% of gas power costs reflect that tax.
  • The package also includes abolishing wind farm subsidies, scrapping Great British Energy, repealing the Climate Change Act, reviving North Sea licensing and reversing the energy profits levy.
  • Labour rejected the claims, arguing the approach would entrench dependence on volatile fossil fuels, while the ECIU said renewables cut overall power costs by pushing gas out of the market.
  • No policy has been implemented and the proposals remain campaign pledges without independent verification.
