Conservation Efforts Give Hope for Survival of Vaquita Porpoise

Video footage shows around a dozen vaquita porpoises, including calves, remaining in their habitat.
The number of fishing boats in the vaquita's habitat has dropped over 90% due to improved enforcement.
Experts estimate there are still between 10 to 13 vaquita porpoises left in the wild.
Illegal fishing nets are the main threat to the vaquita and have caused a population decline of over 95% since 1997.
Continued conservation efforts are still urgently needed to prevent extinction of the vaquita.
