Consensys Splits Into Two Companies as Existing Unit Rebrands as MetaMask

The move carves out a consumer-focused MetaMask to chase retail finance opportunities while a new Consensys will concentrate on Ethereum protocol and institutional infrastructure.

Overview

  • Consensys announced on Sept. 9 that it will reorganize so the current legal entity becomes MetaMask, with co‑founder Joe Lubin as chairman and CEO and the new Consensys formed to hold protocol and institutional businesses.
  • MetaMask will focus on consumer finance and expand services beyond a wallet to payments, savings and trading, building on recent launches such as Money/Master Account, the mUSD stablecoin and a Mastercard‑linked debit card.
  • The newly formed Consensys will retain Linea, the Besu execution client and the Teku consensus client and will target banks, asset managers and other institutional customers under CEO Mike Kriak and president David Cunningham.
  • The companies are expected to operate independently after a planned separation that Consensys aims to complete by the end of 2026, users’ wallets and keys will not change, and the firms have not disclosed how assets, staff or ownership will be split.
  • The split reflects Consensys’s decade‑long evolution from an Ethereum incubator to a consumer platform and an institutional infrastructure provider, and it leaves open key questions about financing, IPO or token plans that will shape each company’s next steps.
