Connecticut Skydiver, 62, Dies Days After Midair Collision Over Orange Airport

  • Robert Szabo, 62, died Tuesday evening after being injured in an Oct. 4 skydiving incident at Orange Municipal Airport, officials said.
  • Jumptown Skydiving reported a midair collision between two experienced jumpers, and the Orange fire chief said the other skydiver was not injured.
  • Szabo landed on airport property under a functioning parachute and was transported by ambulance to UMass Medical Center in Worcester.
  • The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit attached to the Northwestern DA’s Office, Orange police, and the FAA are investigating, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
  • The FAA told local media it is not responding to routine inquiries due to a funding lapse, and local reporting notes this is the second death linked to Jumptown in less than a decade.
