Overview

  • Ed Lovely and his fishing partner Moe Giovanni landed the estimated 700-pound thresher shark off Stonington during a late-July outing
  • The pair spent more than six hours battling the shark, alternating roles to reel it in and tie it alongside their 16.5-foot boat
  • A spokesperson for the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection confirmed the Marine Trophy Fish Award application is under review and Lovely has reached out to NOAA for record verification
  • The shark was filleted and its meat packed into coolers before being distributed among family and friends
  • If approved, the catch would surpass the current state record of a 650-pound mako shark caught in 1987
