Conicet Wraps Up Mar del Plata Live Stream Ahead of Uruguay Deep-Sea Survey

The Falkor (too) departs for Uruguay later this month to begin the SUB 200 campaign before heading back in late September for further continental-slope research off Argentina.

Overview

  • The Mar del Plata deep-sea phase of the Conicet-Schmidt Ocean Institute live stream ends on August 10 after nearly three weeks of daily ROV dives.
  • High-definition feeds drew over one million viewers and revealed species such as a pink “Dumbo” octopus at 3,781 meters, turning delicate invertebrates into symbols of opposition to President Milei’s science budget cuts.
  • Twenty special live broadcasts with schools allowed students to tour ship labs remotely and engage directly with scientists aboard the Falkor (too).
  • Late-August operations will shift to the Uruguayan continental slope for the SUB 200 campaign, where 37 researchers will survey 50 designated sites.
  • The vessel will return September 30 to launch expeditions off Viedma and Rawson through October 30, followed by surveys of the Bahía Blanca and Almirante Brown canyon systems.
