CONICET Launches Live-Streamed Deep-Sea Survey of Patagonian Canyons Beginning Sept. 30

Led by oceanographer Silvia Romero, the monthlong Falkor (too) mission will test how Patagonian submarine canyons modulate the Malvinas Current using robots, autonomous vehicles, sensor buoys.

Overview

  • Live broadcasts will stream on the Schmidt Ocean Institute YouTube channel as ROV SuBastian and AUVs map the seabed and capture high-definition imagery.
  • Fieldwork targets the Bahía Blanca system off Viedma and the Almirante Brown system off Rawson, with operations scheduled from September 30 into late October.
  • Researchers will deploy a fixed SHN oceanographic buoy with meteorological and current sensors plus drifting GPS buoys to trace surface flows.
  • Water and seabed samples, including plankton collections, will feed months of laboratory analysis to inform marine conservation.
  • The campaign is backed by Schmidt Ocean Institute, Fundación Williams, SHN, INIDEP and CONICET institutes, following a widely viewed Mar del Plata expedition earlier this year.
