Congress Sets Screening Panels for Five States, Priyanka Gandhi to Lead Assam

The move centralizes candidate shortlisting ahead of Assam’s expected March–April election.

Overview

  • The AICC, through a notification by K.C. Venugopal, constituted four-member screening committees for Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and West Bengal.
  • Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will chair the Assam panel, joined by Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, Imran Masood and Sirivella Prasad to vet candidates and steer consultations.
  • Madhusudan Mistry will head Kerala’s committee, T.S. Singh Deo will lead Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and B.K. Hariprasad will chair West Bengal.
  • The party said general secretaries or in-charges, PCC presidents, CLP leaders and AICC secretaries attached to the in-charges will serve as ex-officio members.
  • Political reactions followed, with BJP and JD(U) casting the move as a leadership play and Congress calling it routine organization, as the party coordinates with regional allies on a common platform for the likely March–April Assam vote.
