Congress Revamps Assam Unit with New Political Affairs Committee and District Chiefs

Overview

  • Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge approved the constitution of a 19-member Political Affairs Committee and the appointment of state office bearers with immediate effect.
  • AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh was named chairman of the new PAC and Hem Hari Pegu was appointed treasurer of the Assam Congress.
  • The committee’s membership includes Assam chief Gaurav Gogoi, former state leaders Debabrata Saikia and Bhupen Borah, MPs Pradyut Bordoloi and Rakibul Hussain, Ripun Borah and other senior figures.
  • The party has designated 14 vice-presidents, 35 general secretaries, 65 secretaries and 20 joint secretaries to reinforce its organisational framework.
  • The restructuring targets recovery of lost vote share among tea garden tribes and the Ahom community ahead of next year’s assembly elections.
