Congress Restores $1.4 Billion for Navy F/A-XX as Service Eyes Downselect

Navy leaders say the jet will be a carrier-optimized design distinct from the Air Force’s F-47.

Overview

  • The Senate Appropriations Committee approved $1.4 billion on Jul. 31 for FY2026, enabling the F/A-XX program to resume progress toward selecting a development winner.
  • Vice Adm. Daniel Cheever said he is looking forward to a downselect and emphasized a purpose-built carrier aircraft that combines the Super Hornet and Growler roles to ensure future sea control.
  • Boeing released new F/A-XX artwork showing similarities to its F-47, while Northrop Grumman has also revealed a concept; Lockheed Martin is reportedly no longer in the Navy competition.
  • Adm. Daryl Caudle told senators the Navy has a validated requirement and needs to field the capability quickly, with plans to introduce F/A-XX in the 2030s alongside the F-35C.
  • Program planning continues within a broader family-of-systems approach as the Navy advances MQ-25 integration for manned–unmanned teaming, with carrier integration targeted beginning in 2026.
