Congress Objects to ‘Nehru’ Dropped From Worli Metro Station Name

MMRC says a 2013 decision to match the venue’s official title set the ‘Science Centre’ name, with the timing of the change still unclear.

Overview

  • Mumbai Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant accused the ruling party of deliberately omitting Jawaharlal Nehru’s name and called the move a deep insult.
  • The Worli stop on Line-3 is officially listed as Science Centre, next to the landmark Nehru Science Centre commonly used as the local place-name.
  • In a media response, MMRC said the station was notified as Science Museum in 2013 and later aligned to Science Centre to reflect the building’s actual name.
  • MMRC has not answered follow-up queries on when the renaming occurred, and no correction or reversal has been announced since the line opened.
  • The dispute surfaced days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the final phase of the 33.5-km Aqua Line on October 9, and Congress linked the omission to other recent name changes such as the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library and NYKS.
