Congress Names New District Chiefs in Telangana and Rajasthan, With Some Posts on Hold

The observer-led overhaul seeks to energise grassroots units before local body polls.

Overview

  • In Telangana, the AICC released a full slate of DCC presidents that includes five sitting MLAs and five women, with names such as Beerla Ilaiah in Bhongir and Medipally Satyam in Karimnagar.
  • The AICC kept Sangareddy and Rangareddy DCC posts pending due to unresolved factional disputes, with T. Nirmala Jagga Reddy continuing in Sangareddy until a decision is taken.
  • Local pushback followed the Telangana rollout, including a resignation by DY Giri and complaints from BC and minority leaders in the erstwhile Adilabad region after three of four DCC posts went to ST leaders.
  • Dissent also surfaced in Nalgonda and Yadadri-Bhongir as senior aspirants objected to selections they said prioritised caste equations or concentrated posts with MLAs and loyalists.
  • In Rajasthan, Congress appointed 45 DCC presidents with 12 MLAs and five former MLAs among them, retained incumbents in eight districts, and left five districts pending, while Himachal Pradesh moved to the selection stage with 36 observers for 12 districts.
