Congress Cites Party Tally for Big Lead in Telangana Panchayat Phase 1 as Phase-2 Vote Nears

Opposition allegations over malpractice cast a cloud over the next round.

Overview

  • The ruling party said its candidates won 2,864 of 4,235 sarpanch seats in the first phase, a 67.63% share, based on its district-wise compilation that is not independently verified.
  • Party figures credited BRS with 1,143 seats (26.99%), BJP with 185 (4.37%), and independents and others with 43 (1.02%), and asserted majorities in all 31 districts that voted.
  • The State Election Commission scheduled the second-phase polling for Sunday, covering 3,911 sarpanch posts and 29,903 ward member posts.
  • Official data show 415 sarpanches and 8,304 ward members were elected unanimously, reducing the number of contests still to be decided.
  • Polling will run from 7 am to 1 pm with counting from 2 pm, as Congress leaders face village-level protests and BRS accuses the ruling party of using money and muscle power.
