Congress Appoints Amit Chavda as Gujarat Unit Chief, Tushar Chaudhary as Legislature Party Leader

Congress launches a drive to rebuild its grassroots network after bypoll setbacks forced the previous state chief to resign

  • Amit Chavda, a five-time MLA from Anklav and former GPCC president (2018–21), has taken charge of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect.
  • Dr Tushar Chaudhary, tribal leader and former Union minister, assumes the role of leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the Gujarat Assembly.
  • The appointments were announced by AICC general secretary K C Venugopal on July 17 following Shaktisinh Gohil’s resignation after BJP and AAP wins in the Kadi and Visavadar bypolls.
  • Congress holds just 12 seats in the 182-member state assembly and has been out of power in Gujarat since 1995, underscoring the need for organisational renewal.
  • Chavda has pledged to launch a ‘Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan’ to empower grassroots workers and strengthen party structures from booth to state level.
