Coney Beach Pleasure Park to Reopen Friday Following Rollercoaster Derailment

Health and Safety Executive inspectors have approved a limited reopening of the Wacky Worm ride after a derailment that injured 14 guests.

  • On August 13 at around 5:50 pm the Wacky Worm children’s rollercoaster derailed at Coney Beach Pleasure Park in Porthcawl, causing minor injuries to 13 children and one adult.
  • The Welsh Ambulance Service sent three emergency ambulances, three high-acuity response paramedics and its Hazardous Area Response Team, transporting seven patients to hospital for further treatment.
  • South Wales Police led the scene response and called in Health and Safety Executive inspectors, who are now probing maintenance records and operational oversight of the third-party ride.
  • Coney Beach has cleared the site, issued refunds to affected guests and scheduled the Wacky Worm to run from 12 pm to 9 pm on Friday after safety inspections.
  • No formal cause has been confirmed as investigators continue to examine possible mechanical faults and oversight responsibilities.
