Computer Glitch Prevents Spain's Irene Paredes from Winning 100th Cap in Women's Nations League Match

System error results in submission of previous match's squad list, leaving injured Amaiur Sarriegi on official squad instead of Paredes, Spain still leads their Nations League group following a 7-1 win over Switzerland.

  • Spain's defender Irene Paredes was barred from making her 100th appearance for the women's national team due to a 'computer error', as reported by head coach Montse Tome, effectively delaying the milestone that only two other players have reached: Alexia Putellas and Jenni Hermoso.
  • The error originated from an issue where the Spanish soccer federation was unable to appropriately update the squad in UEFA's official application, resulting in the submission of a previous match's squad for the Nations League game against Switzerland.
  • The glitch effectively meant injured player Amaiur Sarriegi was listed on Spain's official squad list for the game against Switzerland, despite Sarriegi being unavailable due to injury; Paredes, who was fit for play, consequently failed to make the list.
  • Despite this setback, Spain achieved a 7-1 win over Switzerland in the Women's Nations League, maintaining their lead in the group with 12 points after four matches, which is a 5-point lead over Sweden.
  • The match also saw notable performances from Alexia Putellas, who scored twice, and Aitana Bonmati, the women's Ballon d'Or award winner, who played 77 minutes.
