Comoros President Azali Assoumani Re-elected Amidst Fraud Allegations

Comoros President Azali Assoumani has been re-elected for a fourth term in a poll disputed by the opposition as 'fraudulent', securing the win with 63% of the vote.
Opposition candidates allege instances of ballot stuffing in favour of Mr Assoumani and that polls had closed early.
Protests have erupted in the country following the announcement of the election results, with police responding with tear gas.
Assoumani, a former military officer, first came to power through a coup in 1999 and was able to seek a fourth term after a controversial referendum removed presidential term limits in 2018.
The opposition is demanding the election be declared void, citing large discrepancies in the number of votes reportedly cast for the presidential and regional governor races.
