Communities Mark 80th VJ Day With Local Ceremonies and National Arboretum Observance

Preparations across towns feature beacon lightings, community festivals alongside a government-backed service at the National Memorial Arboretum.

  • Salisbury will hold a VJ80 service at its war memorial on August 15 at 5:30 pm with the Royal British Legion and city council providing music and a short act of remembrance.
  • Ulverston has scheduled a short service at 10:45 am at the Market Street War Memorial followed by a beacon lighting at 9:15 pm on Hoad Hill and a reading of the VJ Day proclamation.
  • Blackburn’s Royal British Legion branch will stage a free community festival at East Lancs Cricket Club on August 16 starting at noon with food stalls, live music and family activities.
  • The Royal British Legion and the government will sponsor a national commemorative event next Friday at the National Memorial Arboretum to unite local and central observances.
  • Organisers are focusing on intergenerational engagement to honour remaining Pacific-theatre veterans and preserve public memory of Japan’s 1945 surrender.
