Communities, Cultural Institutions and Broadcasters Unveil Plans for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

This year's observances coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's final report.

Overview

  • Medicine Hat will host a 5 p.m. walk for reconciliation at Medicine Hat College with speeches by Elders, a blanket ceremony, an honour song and a round dance, with city flags at half-mast and the Saamis Tepee lit orange.
  • Local schools in Medicine Hat are encouraging orange shirts and classroom activities, with several Catholic schools taking part in a 10 Days of Truth and Reconciliation learning program using age-appropriate resources.
  • Toronto’s yal OnOntario Museum is offering Indigenous Voices webinars and Toronto Public Library branches are holding National Day for Truth and Reconciliation film screenings and cultural programs.
  • The Woodland Cultural Centre in Brantford will unveil the Mohawk Institute Residential School as an Interpretive Historic Site and present Orange Shirt Day programming that includes an opening ceremony, film screenings and a survivor Q&A.
  • The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund will air the fourth A Day to Listen from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 30 and stream live YouTube episodes honoring the TRC anniversary, while Lethbridge will stage a free Give It a Try family event at Legacy Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
