Commanders' Coach Ron Rivera Takes Over Defensive Play-Calling Duties

Washington Commanders' head coach Ron Rivera has taken over defensive play-calling duties following the firing of defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and defensive backs coach Brent Vieselmeyer.
The Commanders' defense, which currently ranks 29th out of 32 teams, is expected to be simplified under Rivera to allow players to react faster.
Rivera's decision comes as the Commanders prepare to face the AFC East-leading Miami Dolphins and their NFL-best offense.
Rivera, a former linebacker, last took on play-calling duties in 2018 with the Carolina Panthers.
Despite the changes, quarterback Sam Howell does not expect his relationship with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy to be affected.
