Columbia Mother Sentenced to 20 Years for 2024 Shooting of Two Teens

Prosecutors characterized the case as vigilante retaliation supported by cellphone and surveillance evidence.

Overview

  • Judge imposed a 20-year prison term for Dieneba Sekou Traore, 48, with five years of supervised probation to follow.
  • The Howard County jury convicted her of two counts of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, firearm use, and related conspiracies, and acquitted her of attempted first-degree murder and murder conspiracy.
  • Police said the Oct. 12, 2024 shooting occurred in the Columbia Place Plaza lot by the Giant, where two teens were found with gunshot wounds to their legs.
  • Witnesses reported the shooter left in the back of a white Mercedes SUV linked to Traore, and prosecutors presented cell-tower data and video while asserting a man known as “Kevin” fired the shots.
  • The defense argues the cellphone-location testimony was flawed and plans to seek a new trial, while co-defendant Wyketa Burgess has a jury trial scheduled for March.
