Colts Add Ameer Abdullah to Practice Squad, Release Khalil Herbert

The 32-year-old brings proven receiving ability plus return value for situational depth behind Jonathan Taylor.

Overview

  • Indianapolis announced Abdullah’s signing to the practice squad and corresponding release of Khalil Herbert from the unit.
  • Abdullah spent the past three seasons with the Raiders, posting 311 rushing yards, 2 rushing touchdowns, and 40 receptions for 261 yards and 3 receiving touchdowns in 2024.
  • He joined the 49ers on July 31, suffered a rib injury in the preseason, went to injured reserve on Aug. 11, and was waived with an injury settlement on Aug. 19.
  • Under NFL rules, practice-squad players can be elevated for games on a limited basis, and Abdullah is not on the Colts’ 53-man roster.
  • The move follows the Colts’ Week 1 win and adds a veteran third-down and special-teams option behind lead back Jonathan Taylor.
