Colorado to Import Up to 15 Wolves from British Columbia for Reintroduction
The new wolf translocation effort aims to bolster Colorado's wolf population, following challenges with previous sources and ongoing livestock depredation issues.
- Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has secured an agreement with the British Columbia Ministry of Water, Lands, and Resource Stewardship to capture and relocate up to 15 wolves to Colorado between December 2024 and March 2025.
- This move comes after a previous agreement with the Confederated Tribes of Colville Reservation in Washington was rescinded due to concerns from Colorado tribal nations.
- The wolves will be examined for health issues and will not be relocated if they are from packs with histories of repeated livestock depredations.
- CPW has faced difficulties finding U.S. states willing to provide wolves, with Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming all declining requests.
- Concerns remain among Colorado ranchers about livestock depredations, as previous wolves from Oregon were involved in numerous livestock killings.
