Overview
- The Colorado Attorney General's Office launched a free, scenario-based online curriculum that guides K–12 and higher-education staff in recognizing risk and using the state's Extreme Risk Protection Order process.
- Available through CO Train, the program includes two interactive modules for K–12 and two for higher education, each about 30 minutes, with certificates eligible for continuing-education credit.
- The modules cover warning signs of potential gun violence, ERPO basics, collaborating with threat-assessment teams, a step-by-step filing roadmap, and case studies with downloadable resources.
- Educator uptake has been limited, with only two petitions filed by college staff in more than two years and K–12 usage unclear because petitions involving minors are sealed by the courts.
- In Colorado's first five years under the ERPO law, a little over 700 petitions were filed and nearly 500 were granted at least on an emergency basis, and courts hold initial ERPO hearings within about a day.
