Overview

  • Heskett, 26, a seasonal ranger, radioed on Aug. 19 that he had been stabbed at Staunton State Park, prompting a search for an alleged attacker.
  • His report triggered a large multi-agency response that included SWAT, drones, and Colorado State Patrol aviation, plus alerts to 8,600 residents and school lockdowns.
  • Investigators later concluded the incident was fabricated and said they believe Heskett stabbed himself, though a full evidentiary account has not been released.
  • He was airlifted to a hospital, underwent surgery, remains under medical care, and will be transferred to the Jefferson County jail upon release with bond set at $10,000.
  • Charges include two felonies—attempting to influence a public servant and tampering with evidence—along with false reporting, reckless endangerment, obstructing government operations, and second-degree official misconduct.
