Colorado Ramps Up Guanella Pass Traffic Controls Ahead of Fall Colors

New signage aims to keep shoulders clear so emergency crews can access Guanella Pass during record visitor numbers.

Fall colors on the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway are stunning, but so are the numbers of vehicles on the 22-mile road during leaf-peeping season. Temporary closures may be in store this season to prevent overcrowding. (Hyoung Chang, Denver Post file)

Overview

  • Officials installed no-parking signs on July 23 at the 11,670-foot summit and nearby trailheads to deter roadside parking.
  • Clear Creek and Park counties, the Arapaho National Forest and the town of Georgetown will set up sheriff’s checkpoints at both ends of the 22-mile byway.
  • Illegally parked vehicles face towing and a $87.50 citation under the strengthened enforcement plan.
  • Authorities have warned they will temporarily close the pass at Georgetown and Grant if traffic volumes exceed safe levels.
  • Last year’s leaf-peeping weekends saw up to 10,000 cars per day, blocking access and delaying emergency responses on the roadway.
