Colorado Father Convicted in Toddler's Fentanyl Death

Alonzo Montoya found guilty of child abuse and racketeering after his 22-month-old daughter ingested lethal dose of fentanyl in drug-dealing home.

  • Alonzo Montoya, a 33-year-old Colorado man, has been found guilty of child abuse resulting in death, racketeering, and other charges after his 22-month-old daughter, Aviyana Montoya, died from ingesting fentanyl.
  • Aviyana had 10 times the lethal dose of fentanyl in her system, an amount sufficient to kill an adult, and was also exposed to amphetamines and other narcotics.
  • Home surveillance footage revealed that Aviyana was left unchecked in her crib for nearly 14 hours, during which she was seen crying and struggling to breathe.
  • Montoya was running a drug-dealing operation from his home, with surveillance footage showing drug dealing and usage before, during, and after Aviyana's death.
  • Aviyana's mother, Nicole Danielle Casias, faces the same charges and is set for a jury trial on March 11.
