Colorado Confirms Death of Reintroduced Wolf 2506 With Federal Review Underway

A federal review will determine the cause under endangered-species protections.

Overview

  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife said a collar sent a mortality alert on Oct. 30 and the wolf died in southwestern Colorado.
  • The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will investigate and conduct a necropsy, and the cause of death has not been released.
  • The female was one of 15 wolves captured in British Columbia and released in January, and the state now tracks about 20 collared animals with at least 10 pups born this summer.
  • Six of those 15 Canada-sourced wolves have died so far, including two that were legally shot in Wyoming.
  • Officials plan additional releases this winter, but sourcing remains uncertain after federal opposition to Canadian imports and refusals from some U.S. states.
