Colorado Climbers and Wildlife Officials Rescue Elk Tangled

The 700-pound bull elk was tranquilized and carefully lowered down a cliff after becoming ensnared at a popular ice climbing area in Lake City.

  • Ice climbers in Lake City discovered the distressed elk early Friday morning, tangled in a rope at an ice climbing site.
  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officials tranquilized the elk and used a ski mask to shield its eyes during the rescue process.
  • Climbers collaborated with CPW to rig a rope system to safely lower the 700-pound animal down the cliff face.
  • The elk, estimated to be 2 1/2 years old, suffered minor scrapes from its struggle but was otherwise unharmed.
  • After the tranquilizer's effects were reversed, the elk regained mobility and ran off into the snowy canyon.
