Colombia Seizes 1.8 Tonnes of Cocaine in Joint Pacific Operation With El Salvador

At COP30, President Gustavo Petro framed the casualty-free interdiction as a rebuttal to U.S. boat pursuits he says have left nearly 70 dead.

Overview

  • Colombian Naval Intelligence and the Salvadoran Navy conducted the operation in Pacific waters, according to Petro.
  • Authorities detained three Ecuadorian nationals in connection with the seized shipment.
  • Petro emphasized there were “zero deaths” in the capture and cast it as evidence of effective regional cooperation.
  • The announcement comes after OFAC sanctions in October targeting Petro, his wife Verónica Alcocer, his son Nicolás, and Interior Minister Armando Benedetti, allegations he rejects.
  • Separately, Petro said security forces in Tunja located a truck with 24 explosives near the Bolívar Battalion and evacuated civilians and troops without casualties.
