Cologne WWII Bomb Near Stadionbad Neutralized as Cordon Lifts

Authorities say a controlled fuze detonation made the device safe, allowing evacuations and transport closures to be rolled back.

Overview

  • A British ten-centner bomb with a tail impact fuse was uncovered during survey work near the Stadionbad in Köln-Müngersdorf on Tuesday.
  • Specialists neutralized the device around 6 p.m. local time and detonated the fuze, which produced a loud bang but caused no injuries.
  • The Kampfmittelbeseitigungsdienst Rheinland, the Düsseldorf district government, and Cologne’s public order office coordinated the operation.
  • A 500-meter exclusion zone was enforced, with about ten residents evacuated and parts of the German Sport University suspending operations.
  • Officials closed 32 streets and intersections, affecting KVB Line 1 services and routes on Junkersdorfer Straße as well as parts of Aachener Straße and Militärringstraße, with restrictions now being lifted.
