Cologne Rail Hub to Largely Shut Nov. 14–24 as Germany Pushes Signal Upgrades

The work commissions new electronic interlockings to improve reliability, easing staffing pressure.

Overview

  • From Friday, Nov. 14 at 21:00 until Nov. 24, long‑distance and regional trains will not serve Köln Hbf, with only the S‑Bahn largely operating and a full overnight closure set for Nov. 19–20.
  • Operators have published reroutes and replacements, with many ICE stopping at Köln‑Ehrenfeld or Köln Messe/Deutz, some long‑distance services bypassing the city, about a dozen regional lines diverted, and night buses on select dates.
  • Berlin’s U2 is suspended between Theodor‑Heuss‑Platz and Ruhleben through Nov. 30, with bus replacement on the section and expected delays on the rest of the line.
  • In Munich, recent Stammstrecke works are mostly finished but signal issues are causing delays and targeted cancellations, and only limited S‑Bahn service will run through the core during the Nov. 15–17 work window.
  • The Gera–Greiz line will be replaced by buses Nov. 17 to about Dec. 12 for signal upgrades, part of a program that equips the corridor with new digital signaling and interlocking by 2027.
