Cologne Police Release Surveillance Photos in Search for Suspect in Burning of WDR ‘Maus’ Statue

The public appeal introduces the first published footage in the four-month investigation.

Overview

  • Authorities published images from a surveillance camera and asked witnesses to help identify an unknown man linked to the July attack.
  • The incident occurred between about 11:35 p.m. and 12:40 a.m. on July 26, and a security employee reported the fire at around 12:50 a.m.
  • Police say the suspect repeatedly tried to feed the flames and remained at the scene for more than an hour before leaving.
  • The man is described as slim, about 48 to 60 years old, wearing a light-brown sweater, blue trousers and blue sneakers, and arriving and fleeing on a women’s bicycle.
  • The fiberglass statue was damaged, then repaired in a specialist workshop and returned to its spot outside WDR about a month later, while the case remains open.
