Cologne Court Hands Suspended Prison Terms for Cologne/Bonn Airport Blockade

The judge called the breach an especially serious form of trespass.

Overview

  • The Amtsgericht Köln convicted a 27-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman of trespass and property damage for an August 15, 2024 runway access blockade.
  • The man received an 11-month sentence and the woman a 9-month sentence, both suspended, plus €2,000 each to a charity and 300 hours of unpaid work.
  • The pair cut through the perimeter fence with a bolt cutter and glued themselves to an access road to a runway, temporarily halting operations.
  • The disruption caused 20 flight cancellations, one diversion to Düsseldorf, and three returns to gate, directly affecting about 3,000 passengers and indirectly affecting about 13,000.
  • The court noted at least €50,000 in lost airport revenue, and Letzte Generation said similar actions occurred that day in Berlin-Brandenburg, Stuttgart and Nuremberg.
