Collins, Grassley Demand Reversal as OMB Moves to Cut Inspectors General Council Funding Oct. 1

Bipartisan Senate leaders seek to avert a shutdown of legally required oversight functions.

Overview

  • The inspectors general council (CIGIE) notified lawmakers that OMB plans to withhold its funding starting Wednesday, a move the council says would halt statutory duties and trigger furloughs.
  • Acting chair Tammy Hull warned that Oversight.gov and 28 supported OIG websites would be disrupted, and whistleblowers would likely be unable to file anonymous complaints online.
  • In a letter to OMB Director Russ Vought, Senators Susan Collins and Chuck Grassley urged an immediate reversal and included the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee in their request.
  • The senators said Congress has already appropriated FY 2026 money for CIGIE and PRAC and argued any shutdown would result from OMB’s apportionment decision rather than a lapse in appropriations.
  • An OMB spokesperson said inspectors general have become partisan and corrupt, while the funding dispute follows earlier mass IG firings that a judge last week ruled violated congressional notice requirements.
