Overview

  • A 10 cm slice of the 1947 Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip wedding cake sold for £2,000 (£2,700 with fees) at Reeman Dansie Auctioneers on July 1.
  • The relic remains in its original presentation box stamped “EP,” bearing Buckingham Palace’s address and a note to Chief Petty Officer F. Lownes, who never ate the slice.
  • Buyer Gerry Layton, already owner of a Charles and Diana cake piece, will cut off one-third of the vintage fruit cake and flambé it in rum to eliminate bacteria.
  • Layton intends to consume the treated portion as part of a state banquet reenactment aboard the restored Royal Yacht Britannia to celebrate his 65th birthday.
  • On the same day, Reeman Dansie also sold a sealed slice of Princess Anne’s 1973 wedding cake for £320.
