Colin Allred Emerges as Front-Runner in Texas Senate Race Despite Less Active Campaign

Allred Launches First TV Ads, Outpaces Primary Opponent Gutierrez in Fundraising

  • Colin Allred, a Democratic congressman from Dallas, is running for Senate against incumbent Ted Cruz. Despite not campaigning as much in Texas as his primary opponent, state senator Roland Gutierrez, Allred has emerged as the front-runner for the Democratic nomination.
  • Allred has launched his first television ads of the election cycle in Houston and Dallas. The ads are largely biographical, highlighting his Texas upbringing, football career, and work as a civil rights attorney.
  • Allred's campaign has significantly outpaced Gutierrez's in fundraising, starting the year with more than $10 million in the bank after raising $4.8 million in the last quarter of 2023. Gutierrez had raised just over $630,000 by the end of September.
  • Despite his fundraising advantage, many voters remain undecided. A recent poll found that 37% of Democratic primary voters were unsure who they would support, with Allred drawing the backing of 29% of voters.
  • Gutierrez has been actively campaigning across the state, with his campaign reporting that he has visited more than a dozen cities and traveled over 3,700 miles across Texas.
