Cold Wave Holds North India as Delhi Edges Up to 3.8°C After 3°C Low

Forecasters expect a western disturbance from January 15 to nudge night temperatures higher.

Overview

  • IMD reported Delhi’s minimum at 3.8°C on Wednesday (Palam 4.4°C, Lodhi Road 3.6°C, Ayanagar 4.0°C, Ridge 4.6°C) with the cold wave persisting and dense morning fog lingering.
  • Air quality deteriorated again, with CPCB placing the city’s AQI in the very poor range around 354 and several stations slipping into the severe category.
  • On Tuesday, the capital hit 3.0°C — its coldest January morning in three years — and an orange alert remained in place for cold wave conditions.
  • The chill extended across the region, with Hisar at 0.5°C, Rajasthan stations near 1–3°C, Punjab in the low single digits, and parts of Kashmir sub-zero as sections of Dal Lake froze.
  • IMD and private forecasters say minimums should start rising from January 15–16 under an approaching western disturbance, with snowfall likely in the higher Himalayas and only gradual relief for the plains.
