Cold Wave Grips South Korea, Driving Subzero Lows and Marine Warnings

A continental high from northern China triggered the sudden plunge.

Overview

  • KMA issued cold wave advisories Sunday night for Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi and many inland provinces, the season’s first for the capital.
  • Monday morning lows fell 5–10 degrees Celsius from Sunday, reaching −3.8 C in Paju and −3.1 C in Cheorwon, with several Seoul districts below zero despite a 0.5 C central observatory reading.
  • Strong coastal winds prompted marine alerts for southern and eastern waters, with 30–65 km/h gusts and waves of 2–4 meters, peaking above 5 meters in parts of the East Sea.
  • Farmers were urged to protect harvests, and authorities asked residents to secure outdoor facilities to reduce accident risk.
  • The chill is forecast to ease from Tuesday with temperatures trending toward seasonal levels by Wednesday, and some advisories were lifted in parts of the country Monday afternoon.
