Cold Warning Persists in Western Austria as Thaw Looms Thursday

Rare ice cover on rivers and Lake Constance has turned parts of Vorarlberg into outdoor skating and walking venues.

Overview

  • Geosphere Austria reports the alert remains in place for nearly all of western Austria and parts of Upper Austria, Carinthia, Styria and Lower Austria.
  • High-altitude stations logged the lowest readings, including −24.5 °C at Brunnenkogel and −22.8 °C at the Pitztaler Gletscher, with severe valley lows such as about −20 °C in Schmirn.
  • In Vorarlberg, Lech reached −20.3 °C, the coldest among inhabited communities in the state, while higher peaks like the Valluga fell to −21.1 °C.
  • Widespread freezing has covered sections of the Bregenzerach and the Alten Rhein, and shallow zones of Lake Constance such as the Gnadensee have been traversed by walkers and skaters.
  • Forecasts from Thursday call for a noticeable temperature rise with daytime highs above 0 °C, mountain snowfall focused in northwest stau areas, and a likely rain–snow mix in some valleys.
