Cold, Sunny Second Christmas Day in the Netherlands as Sunshine Record Nears

Forecasters say combined sunshine over both days may top the KNMI 1961 mark of 12.5 hours.

Overview

  • Daytime highs are expected around 1–2 °C with dry, bright conditions and a moderate to fairly strong northeast wind lowering the perceived temperature.
  • Clear skies tonight will bring light to locally moderate frost, dipping to roughly −2 to −5 °C by early morning.
  • Meteorologists estimate total sunshine over both Christmas days could reach 13–14 hours, which would set a new national record.
  • The previous benchmark for the sunniest two-day Christmas is 12.5 hours, recorded in 1961 in KNMI measurements kept since 1901.
  • After today, cloud and fog are forecast to spread in from the north with milder conditions by 2–5 °C and winds easing and shifting more northerly.
