Cold Snap Grips Moscow With Yellow Alert for Wet Snow and Ice

The turn follows an unusually warm start to winter that MSU meteorologists link to repeated inflows of very mild air along the periphery of an Icelandic low.

Overview

  • Russia’s Hydrometcentre reported a rapid drop in temperatures on Friday, with central Moscow falling from +5.7°C in the morning to +1.6°C by mid‑afternoon and Dmitrov recording −1.1°C.
  • A yellow weather alert is in effect for Moscow and the region until 21:00 for wet snow adhesion and hazardous black ice, with northwesterly gusts up to 15–17 m/s that could produce local blizzard conditions.
  • Forecasts call for evening readings near −3°C, then −5 to −7°C in parts of the city overnight and −4 to −9°C in the region, with winds 6–11 m/s and stronger gusts.
  • MSU’s meteorological observatory counted four brief snow-cover episodes so far this cold season, none lasting more than 2–3 days or exceeding 7 cm, reflecting delayed establishment of stable snow cover.
  • Urban travel remains vulnerable after Thursday congestion reached 10/10 on Yandex.Maps, with heavy backups across central corridors including the Garden Ring.
